The Blessings of Last Verses of Surah Al-Baqarah

The last verses of Surah Al-Baqarah are one of the most memorized and recited Quranic verses among Muslims and that is for a good reason. Consider the saying of the prophet (s.a.w.) about the last verses of the Surah.

“Whoever recites the last two verses of Surat al-Baqarah at night, it will suffice him’” (According to Abu Masood al-Ansaari and narrated by al-Bukhaari, 4723; Muslim, 807).3

The Prophet (s.a.w.) also said the following:

“Allah inscribed a book two thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth, from which the last two verses of Surat al-Baqarah were revealed. If they are recited for three nights, no Shaytan (devil) will remain in the house) (narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2882).This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’ (1799).

  1. The Messenger (Muhammad) believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and (so do) the believers. Each one believes in Allah, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. (They say), “We make no distinction between one another of His Messengers” – and they say, “We hear, and we obey. (We seek) Your Forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return (of all).”
  1. Allah burdens not a person beyond his scope. He gets reward for that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned. “Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error, our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which. You did lay on those before us (Jews and Christians); our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Pardon us and grant us Forgiveness. Have mercy on us. You are our Maula (Patron, Supporter and Protector, etc.) and give us victory over the disbelieving people.” Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah(2,285:286)

Importance And Benefits of Sending Durood On Prophet PBUH

The reason behind appointing Spiritual Leaders in form of Prophets within different nations by Allah SWT has always been the same, i.e. to being people towards remembrance of One God and living a life of righteousness. All the previous Messengers were chosen for specific peoples, but Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ holds distinction in this regard to have been sent for the whole humankind. The Almighty Lord presented Him with the Holy Quran, which serves as a great source of enlightenment in every walk of life. As the entire world population is benefited through the Holy Prophet ﷺ that is why God, the Exalted says in Furqan e Hameed:

“Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace.” [Quran, 33: 56]

The above mentioned Ayah illustrates that the Most Merciful Himself bestows His favors upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and His Angels also constantly ask Him to so. In this way, Allah SWT urges and directs all the believers also to ask Him to award Rasulullah ﷺ from His Blessings and Tranquility.

This act of asking the Gracious God to grant the Apostle ﷺ with His Favor and Protection is commonly known as “Durood” (Persian) or “As-Salatu alan-n-Nabi” (Arabic), both of which literally mean “prayer”. So, it is basically a form of an entreaty, which all the Muslims are obligated to say on hearing, reading or speaking the name of the Holy Prophet ﷺ in order to pay Him homage in the most rightful manner. It is also the way of fulfilling one`s religious duty of adoring Rasulullah ﷺ as Anas (R.A) has narrated:

“None of you will have faith till he loves me more than his father, his children and all mankind.” (Bukhari)

This Hadith shows that a true disciple of Islam needs to feel affection for the Messenger ﷺ of Allah more than anything else in the world, and that right of Prophet ﷺ could only be fulfilled through adhering to His Sunnah and recalling and venerating His name all the time.

Importance of “As-Salatu Alan-n-Nabi”

As, Durood is a form of prayer to the Almighty Lord that is done for the sake of increase in Favors and Clemency on the Holy Prophet ﷺ, so it occupies a great place in the life of a Muslim. Its huge significance can be observed in the following description:

  1.     Accomplishment Of The Religious Obligation

Durood e Pak is one of the highly valued forms of invocation in the Religion of Peace. It is because Allah SWT Himself sends His Blessings on the Holy Prophet ﷺ, His Angels too ask the Almighty to bless Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ. But when Muslims perform this deed, it brings them closer to the Exalted One and His Messenger ﷺ by accomplishing their sacred duty.

  1.     Being Part of Compulsory Prayers

The enormous status of this Divine action can be seen from the fact that it has even been incorporated in daily mandatory Salah, without which the completion of Namaz is impossible. This incantation presented on the Holy Prophet ﷺ which is recited by each Muslim during every prayer is called Durood e Ibrahimi:

“O Allah, let Your Blessings come upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as you have blessed Ibrahim and his family. Truly, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as you have blessed Ibrahim and his family. Truly, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious”.

It is a means of testifying that one truly believes in the instructions put forward by the Messenger ﷺ of Allah which is done through sending blessings on Him with Hazrat Ibrahim A.S. Since the Message of uprightness came forward through Prophet Ibrahim A.S, (the Ancestor of Rasulullah ﷺ), and through His virtue, Muslims have got their Kaaba and pray in its direction, the Apostle ﷺ of God Himself approves above Durood in the following Hadith:

Narrated Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Laila: Ka’b bin Ujrah met me and said, “Shall I not give you a present I got from the Prophet?” ‘Abdur-Rahman said, “Yes, give it to me.” I said, “We asked Allah’s Apostle saying, ‘O Allah’s Apostle! How should one (ask Allah to) send blessings on you, the members of the family, for Allah has taught us how to salute you (in the prayer)?’ He said, ‘Say: O Allah! Send Your Mercy on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your Mercy on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious. O Allah! Send Your Blessings on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent your Blessings on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious.’“ (Bukhari)

It means that Durood e Ibrahimi is the essential part of Islamic belief being a necessary element in daily Salah.

  1.   Completion Of The Prophet`s PBUH Right

Abu Hurairah (R.A) reported that the Messengerﷺ of Allah said:

“May his nose soil with dust in whose presence mention is made of me and he does not supplicate for me.”(Tirmidhi)

According to the previously stated Hadith, it is the right of Rasulullah ﷺ that every Muslims should say Durood on Him whenever His name is taken in front of them.

Benefits Of Reciting Durood Sharif

Some of the most prominent advantages of the act of As-Salatu alan-n-Nabi as per the Prophetic Sayings are:

  1.     Closeness To The Holy Prophet PBUH On the Final Day

Hazrat Abdullah ibn Ma’sud (R.A) narrates that Sayyidina Rasulullah ﷺ said:

“On the day of Qiyamah the person closest to me will be the one who has sent the most Durood unto me.” (Tirmidhi)

The above mentioned Hadith highlights the remarkable standing of Durood e Pak in a believer`s life that it will eventually lead to attaining nearness to the Messenger ﷺ of God on the Day of Resurrection and get benefited from His Mercy and Intercession.

  1.     Presentation of Durood to Prophet PBUH On Friday

Friday is the most revered and blessed day of the week in Islam, which is even mentioned in the Holy Quran. This day encloses the greatest virtues in gaining the blessings of Allah through different modes of worship like Jummuah prayer and reciting Surah Kahf, and other prayers like Durood Sharif.

“On Fridays, send Durood abundantly on me, as it is presented before me.” (Abu Dawud)

So, Salawat sent on the Holy Prophet ﷺ on the auspicious day of Friday results in great reward in the form of getting prominent near Rasulullah ﷺ as He receives them Himself.

  1.      Raising of One`s Status By Ten Times

Abdullah bin `Amr bin Al-`As (R.A) reported: I heard the Messenger ﷺ of Allah saying:

“Whoever supplicates Allah to exalt for me, Allah would exalt him ten times.”(Muslim)

It means that carrying out of Durood e Pak brings about elevation in a Muslim`s rank near Allah SWT by ten times.

In short, Durood e Pak is solely done for asking Allah SWT to bestow His Blessings and Mercy on His Messenger ﷺ in order to show one`s reverence and gratitude for Rasulullah`s ﷺ services to the Religion of Islam. It not only completes the Prophet`s ﷺ right of honor but also results in getting many of bounties and rewards for God, the Exalted in this world and in the hereafter.

Surah al kahf:

Surah al Kahf is the 18th Surah of Quran and it tells the story of the believers in ancient time who when received the message of Truth accepted it. However, they were to face retaliation from the society they lived in and hence the flee from the city and found protection in a cave where Allah Almighty gave them sleep that lasted for centuries and till then their whole city had converted into believers. This Surah gives the message that those who believe in Allah and ask for protection from Him, He gives them the best protection the likes of which the world has never seen. Besides this illuminating message, the Surah also comes with a variety of virtues as described in the hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The lines below discuss those virtues.

Virtue# 1:

It is narrated by Abu Saeed al-Khurdi, who said:

“Whoever reads Surah al Kahf on the night of Jummah, will have a light that will stretch between him and the Ancient House (Kabah).” (al-Jaami)

This hadith goes on to show the power of the Surah when recited on Friday night. The hadith shows that the Surah brings light to the reader and the stretch of the light covers the area between Kabah and the reader, no matter how far away the reader is from the House of Allah. This stretch of light can be loosely considered as the light of blessings and mercy of Allah. Thus, by reciting the Surah on Friday night one can get hold of such magnanimous mercy and blessings.

Regarding the recitation of Surah al Kahf on Friday night, another hadith narrates:

“Whoever reads Surah al Kahf on the day of Jummah will have a light that will shine from him from one Friday to the next.” (al-Jaami)

Therefore, on Friday night, a Muslim must find time to sit down and read Surah al Kahf and become one of the blessed ones.

Virtue# 2:

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“One who memorized the first ten verses of Surah al Kahf will be secure against the Dajjal (Anti-Christ).” (Muslim)

Dajjal is one of the prominent figures of end of times and he will bring destruction to mankind. He will bring destruction and havoc to the world and because of his might people with low and weak faith will turn towards him and gather with him. At that time those who believe will ask help from Allah Almighty to protect them against his destruction. Therefore, if one wishes to be safe during the time of such grave adversity and annihilation, then one should try to memorize the first ten verses of Surah al Kahf and try reciting them whenever the chance becomes available.

Hazrat Ibn Mardwiyah Al Daiyaa (RA) said that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said in a hadith:

Whoever reads Surah al Kahf on yaumul Jummah, he is immune for 8 days from all fitnah that will happen. When the Dajjal comes out, he will be immune to him.”

Virtue# 3:

On the Authority of Hazrat Aisha (RA); the Prophet (PBUH) said:

“Shall I not inform you of a Surah which is so full of greatness it reaches between the heaven and earth and it has blessings written for it of similar proportions (from the sky to earth) whoever reads it on Yaumul Jummah is forgiven what occurred between that Jummah and the next, in addition to 3 days (i.e. 10days in all) and whoever reads the last five ayat of it when he goes to sleep, Allah will send him that night what he wants. They said, Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said: Sura Ashabul Kahf.”

This hadith gives a variety of virtues of reading and reciting Surah al Kahf on the day of Jummah. The first virtue is that the person gets forgiven from one Friday to the next including the last three days as well. Meaning that by reading Surah al Kahf on Friday one gets to be free of sin for ten days. The second virtue described in the hadith is the granting of whatever a person wishes if he or she sleeps after reciting the last five verses of Surah al Kahf. Therefore, by reading Surah al Kahf on Friday nights and before going to sleep every night one gets the benefits of expatiating from sins as well as granting of wishes, therefore, every Muslim who is in need of these two virtues must make sure that they form the habit of reciting Surah al Kahf every night in general and on Friday nights in particular.

In a nutshell, Surah al Kahf is one of the renowned Surahs of Quran. Besides giving the message of Allah protecting those in miraculous ways who stick to righteousness and stay on the right path, the Surah also comes with a variety of virtues. It helps one expatiate from sins, gain blessings of Allah Almighty and prepare one’s self for the end of days. Therefore, every Muslim man and woman must try getting into the habit of reciting Surah al Kahf on regular bases.
